Why do people think taxing oil companies will reduce gas prices?

Where's the logic that reducing an oil company's profit would also reduce the cost of gas? When the tobacco industry saw all kinds of costs due to lawsuits etc. the price of tobacco didn't drop it went up. Why wouldn't gas go up as well if the cost of doing business in the oil industry went up due to taxes? Why do people think taxing oil companies will reduce gas prices?
Taxing the oil companies will increase the costs of oil.

Just politicians grand standing.

The politicians should go and look in the mirror if they want to know why we have sky high oil prices.

They have not allowed any refineries to be built in 30 years. Why do people think taxing oil companies will reduce gas prices?
Because they don't know that the oil companies will simply pass that on to the consumers.

But in a way taxing oil is good. It will drive the price of oil up so high that it literally will force behavioral change in the US citizenry. It will also speed up development of renewable energies.

Look at the same analogy of tobacco and taxes. Cigarette prices are way too high for me. Therefore, I don't smoke.

So back to Oil, tax it or drill more? Drilling for more oil is such a Red Herring I don't know if I should laugh. If you knew that oil was going up, why not start drilling years ago when it would've made a difference? Bush, McCain, and the rest of the Republican Congress (Remember the dems only took over 2 years ago) failed to initiate this drilling when oil was only $60.

Bush even admits, we have NO short term solutions. It's safe for him to point fingers because his political career is done. All he's doing now is cheerleading. So if we have no long term solutions why not think smarter and try to kill the habit? That's a much more sensible solution than trying to drill for more DOPE!
