Would this off set higher oil prices?

If supply and demand are the main cause of higher oil price then if we increase supply price would drop yes?

so if that is true why dont we drill on American soil and start investing in Oil Shale and Tar sands?

how much oil must be used to make one gallon or oil from oil shale? tar sand?

thank youWould this off set higher oil prices?
Oil prices are in part determined by supply and demand. However, the price is also influenced by international trading. Oil prices are set in US dollars. The US economy is in a shambles, the dollar is weak, it takes more dollars to buy oil. It's less a demand problem and more a US economy problem.

As for oil shale and tar sand... I wish the US would start investing some resources behind mining and refining it. The problem is that won't happen with Bush in office. His family fortune is tied in foreign oil interests. The current mess is adding to his wealth and he's not about to hurt his own wallet to help the US economy. If obama get in office he is completely against increasing domestic oil production for fear it will make the landscape ugly

Vote McCain if you want to solve the fuel crisis.Would this off set higher oil prices?
Oil from shale is expensive, some experts claim it would take a price as high as $90 a barrel to make it profitable. The tar sand in Canada need $60. After the price spike in the 70's oil companies made large investment in oil shale but when price fell the lost it all. Until they are sure the prices are going to remain high shale will not be developed with out government subsidies or guarantees, and it is not politically feasible to give tax money to oil companies right now. The oil sands in Canada are being developed.

There are no large reserves left on American soil and the only places that have not been drilled are in environment sensitive areas. If drilling in them would actually make us energy independent the pro dilling advocates would prevail, but so far the environmentalist are winning because the the actual amount recovered would be small and OPEC could easily cut production enough to cancel the gain.
Why not drill on our own soil? Ask your Democratic controlled Congress!! They're the ones who were going to solve all the nation's problems back when they were running for election!! We could bankrupt the Arab oil cartel if we drilled our own wells in Alaska and offshore.
